Session Title: Parkinson’s Disease: Clinical Trials, Pharmacology And Treatment

Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm

Location: Hall 3FG

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the immediate effect of elastic taping on balance and postural control in early Parkinson’s disease.

Background: Postural control and balance disorders are common in Parkinson’s disease. Elastic taping improves postural control and balance.

Methods: Ten patients with Parkinson Disease (2 female, 8 male) were included in the study. Demographic characteristics were questioned by interviewing and the Balance Master Balance and Performance System was used to evaluate the patients ‘ static and dynamic balance and postural control. Evaluations compromised of Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction and Balance (CTSIB- eyes open, eyes closed, foam-eyes open, foam eyes closed), Tandem Walk Test, Walk Across Test, Limit of Stabilty Test and Sit to Stand Test were performed before and after elastic taping application.

Results: Mean age of patients with Parkinson Disease were 63,4±5,37 years. There was a significant difference between elastic taping and without elastic taping application in terms of Tandem Walk speed, Tandem Walk end sway and Sit to Stand sway velocity (Wilcoxon Test, respectively, p=0,013; p=0,022; p=0,044). There were no statistically significant difference between elastic taping and without elastic taping application in terms of CTSIB, Walk Across Test, Limit of Stabilty Test and Sit to Stand Test (weight transfer) scores. (respectively, p=0,564; p=0,878; p=0,308; p=0,284).

Conclusions: This is the first study which investigate the immediate effect of elastic taping on balance and postural control in early Parkinson’s disease. This study shows that short-term elastic taping application has no significant effect on balance and postural control except tandem walking and sit to stand.
