Meeting: 2026 International Congress

Keywords: Parkinson’s

Category: Parkinson's Disease (Other)

Objective: To assess the impact of the training day titled “Parkinson’s Nurse Program” on nurses’ knowledge regarding Parkinson’s disease

Background: Parkinson’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that is increasing significantly worldwide, mainly due to population aging

Method: A prospective interventional quantitative study conducted at the National Institute of Neurology mongi ben hmida tunis tunisia. The training involved nurses working at Neurology and neurosurgery departements for over a 3-month period. Data were collected using pre and post training self-administered questionnaire and then analyzed.

Results: A total of 45 nurses participated (32 women and 32 men) of whom 28 were aged between 25 and 45 years, and 13 had 2 to 5 years of experience. The findings showed that 71.1% had insufficient knowledge about Parkinson’s disease. Following the training, there was a statistically significant improvement between pre and post test responses regarding the definition of the disease (p=0.001), motor and non-motor symptoms (p<0.001), complications (p<0.001) and treatment options (p<0.001). Additionally, a notable improvement was observed in understanding the nurses’ role managing patients with Parkinson’s disease (p<0.001).

Conclusion: As an essential member of the multidisciplinary team, the Nurse must master the appropriate care for patients with Parkinson’s disease to improve their quality of life. Therefore, ongoing nurse education emerges as a crutial tool to adress the growing complexity of care associated with this disease.
