Objective: To evaluate the demographic, motor and non-motor clinical characteristics of Turkish Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients in our Movement Disorders Outpatient Clinic.

Background: Although PD is still referred as a movement disorder, also associated with a broad spectrum of non-motor symptoms. Parkinson’s disease varies widely in motor and non-motor clinical manifestations.

Methods: Four hundred and twenty-eight patients (259 males, 60.51%) with PD according to the UK Brain Bank PD criteria were enrolled in this single-center retrospective study. Between 2011 and 2017, medical records of PD patients including demographics, motor and non-motor clinical characteristics were reviewed comprehensively. Modified Hoehn and Yahr (mH&Y) stages, Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) part II/ III and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores, levodopa equivalent doses (LED) and Non-motor symptom questionnaire data were obtained.

Results: The mean age and disease duration were 64.48 ± 10.15 and 6.79 ± 6.02 years. One hundred and twelve patients (26.17%) had at least one relative with tremor and/or PD. The tremor was the first symptom of 254 PD patients (59.35%). Motor fluctuation and dyskinesia frequency was 48.01% and 28.04%. The mean mH&Y stage, UPDRS II, III, MMSE scores and LED was 2.05 ± 0.79, 11.63 ± 7.7, 16.95 ± 9.47, 25.58 ± 3.8 and 752.85 ± 495.45 respectively. The most common non-motor symptoms were neuropsychiatric, gastrointestinal disturbances and the pain in Turkish patients with PD.

Conclusions: Turkish PD patients more commonly have had a family history of tremor and/or PD. In this retrospective study, we described and also discussed the motor and non-motor phenotypic characteristics in a large population of Turkish patients with PD.
