Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of ROMP for use in clinical settings.

Background: The Radboud Oral Motor Inventory for Parkinson’s Disease (ROMP) consists of three subscales for self-perception of speech, swallowing, and saliva in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD).

Method: The original English version of ROMP has been translated into Turkish (ROMP-TR) in accordance with international standards. Ninety-three healthy individuals and 124 PwPD were included in our study. Both groups were administered ROMP-TR and similar scales suitable for each subscale, including Voice Handicap Index (VHI), Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10), and Sialorrhea Clinical Scale for Parkinson’s Disease (SCS-TR). The adapted scale was re-tested in PwPD 2 weeks later.

Results: The general Cronbach’s alpha value of the scale was found to be 0.956, and the scale was obtained with high reliability. High reliability was also obtained for speech, swallowing and saliva subscales (Cronbah’s alpha values 0.946, 0.927, 0.931, respectively). Internal reliability of the scale was provided. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, CMIN/DF=2.701 was found and it is within the desired limits. In addition, all path coefficients of the items were found to be statistically significant (p<0.001). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between ROMP speech, swallowing, saliva subscale scores and similar scales scores (r=0.824, 0.941, 0.912; p<0.001, respectively).

Conclusion: ROMP-TR is consistent with the original version of ROMP. As the results of our study showed its validity and reliability in Turkey, ROMP-TR can be used for the evaluation of speech, dysphagia, and drooling in Turkish PwPD.
