Meeting: 2024 International Congress

Abstract Number: 335

Keywords: Non-motor Scales, Parkinson’s, Synucleinopathies

Category: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms

Objective: Objective:Determine the prevalence of NMS in patients with Parkinson disease attending the Hospital San Juan de Dios Neurology Clinic.

Background: Background:Parkinson disease (PD) is recognized as a multisystem disorder with diverse motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS). Even when a wide spectrum of NMS can appear more than a decade before the diagnosis of PD, these are often neglected. Timely detection and management are essential to maintain or enhance the quality of life of patients and caregivers.

Method: A retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive observational study was conducted to collect NMS data. The data was obtained from the electronic records of patients with PD attending the outpatient neurology clinic at the Hospital San Juan de Dios, Santiago, Chile, between the 1st of January, 2022, and December 31, 2023. The MDS Non-motor rating scale (MDS-NMS) was applied by general neurologists to collect NMS data. Additionally, demographic data such as age, sex, and time from diagnosis were also recorded.

Results: Results: From a total of 20 patients in this cohort. Their average age was 70 years and they had been diagnosed with PD for 5 years. The ratio between men and women was 1:1. The Hoehn and Yahr scale mean score was 2. The common non-motor symptoms reported were sleep (80%), gastrointestinal (80%) and urinary issues (80%), and cognitive disorders (80%). Sexual disorders (20%) and cardiovascular disorders (35%) were less frequent.

Conclusion: The knowledge about the frequency of symptoms and the characteristics of our patient population is crucial for improving the quality of care we provide. In our experience, assessing NMS with the MDS-NMS by a general neurologist is feasible, not time-consuming, and seems a convenient tool for monitoring patients in our setting. The relatively young age of our cohort and short disease duration can influence the results.
