Analgesic Effect of Cannabidiol and Tetrahydrocannabinol(THC) on Pain Sensitivity in Reserpine Model of Parkinson’s Disease

Objective: The objectives of the study were to determine the effect of THC and CBD on:

1. Thermal nociceptive threshold in reserpine induced Parkinson’s disease

2. Mechanical nociceptive threshold in Reserpine induced Parkinson’s disease

3. Cold hypersensitivity in reserpine induced Parkinson’s disease

4. Biochemical oxidative stress biomarkers changes using the assessment of (Malondialdehyde, glutathione and superoxide dismutase).

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD)  is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease. It is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by both motor and nonmotor features.  The motor symptoms of PD are attributed to the loss of striatal dopaminergic neurons, although the presence of non-motor symptoms supports neuronal loss in non-dopaminergic areas as well. In addition to the characteristic motor symptoms, nonmotor symptoms such as pain negatively affect the quality of life and cost of living for PD patients (Schapira et al., 2017).

Method:

Assessment of Mechanical Nociception (Randall-Selitto test).

 Assessment of Thermal Nociception (Tail-Flick Test).

Assessment of Cold Hypersensitivity (Tail-Flick Test)

Results:

 RESULTS

The images contain the various results of the study.

Conclusion: Based on this current study, it can be finalized that Cannabidiol treatment significantly increased Thermal and Mechanical pain threshold. It also significantly decreased MDA concentration and significantly increased SOD in reserpine induced model of Parkinson’s disease. THC on the other hand has successfully increased significantly cold pain threshold and mechanical nociceptive threshold. THC also decreased significantly the level of MDA concentration and increased significantly SOD and GSH level. Co-administration of CBD and THC increased significantly SOD and GSH level and decreased significantly the level of MDA concentration.
