Objective: To present cases with Parkinson’s disease (PD) suggesting that a slogan poster aimed at improving gait and preventing falls may be effective.
Background: Patients with PD are often able to walk well in front of their physician in the outpatient clinic; however, once they return home and lose this sense of tension, gait disturbances and falls become more pronounced. I report cases in which a slogan poster for gait improvement and fall prevention was considered helpful.
Method: Three patients with PD followed in our outpatient clinic were included; all had advanced disease with freezing of gait and a history of falls. At the clinic visit, patients were asked which slogans they wanted to post at home (e.g., “Take a big first step”), and they lived with slogan posters bearing a photograph of their primary physician placed in the living room, corridors, and other areas prone to freezing of gait or falls (Fig. 1). At a subsequent visit, subjective effects were assessed through patient interviews.
Results: While the magnitude of the effect varied, patients stated that the presence of the posters improved their gait and facilitated daily activities. The slogan content was revised as needed in accordance with patient preferences.
Conclusion: For some patients with PD who exhibit striking differences in gait performance between medical institutions and their home environment, slogan posters may represent a useful intervention.
