Meeting: 2026 International Congress

Keywords: Non-motor Scales, Parkinson’s

Category: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms (non-Cognitive/ non-Psychiatric)

Objective: To analyze the association between serum levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) with non-motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized not only by motor symptoms but also by a wide range of non-motor manifestations, including sleep disturbances. Neuroinflammatory processes and alterations in lipid metabolism have been proposed to contribute to PD pathophysiology. Biomarkers such as IL-6, LDL, and triglycerides may therefore be associated with the severity of non-motor symptoms in PD.

Method: This cross-sectional study involving 8 patients diagnosed with PD. Serum levels of IL-6, LDL, and triglycerides were measured. Non-motor symptoms and sleep quality were assessed using the Movement Disorder Society–Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS Part I) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Spearman correlation analysis was performed to evaluate associations between biomarkers and clinical measures.

Results: Spearman correlation analysis demonstrated a strong positive correlation between triglyceride levels and the severity of non-motor symptoms measured by MDS-UPDRS Part I (ρ = 0.795, p = 0.018). LDL levels showed a strong positive correlation with triglyceride levels (ρ = 0.881, p = 0.004). IL-6 demonstrated a moderate positive correlation with non-motor symptoms (ρ = 0.691), although the association did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.058). No significant correlations were identified between lipid profile parameters or IL-6 levels and sleep quality assessed by PSQI.

Conclusion: Triglyceride levels were significantly associated with non-motor symptom severity in PD. IL-6 showed a moderate but non-significant association with non-motor symptoms. No relationship was observed between biomarkers and sleep quality.
