Category: Parkinson's Disease (Other)
Objective: To analysed of IL-10 concentrations in serum of patients with PD.
Background: IL-10 is a key pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in the regulation of microglia and systemic inflammation. This cytokine has a neuroprotective effect, that is, it protects dopaminergic neurons from apoptotic destruction.
Method: The study included 80 patients with various clinical forms and stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The control group consisted of 20 patients of the same age without PD. The average disease duration was 5.8±3.7 years. The amount of IL-10 was determined by IFA
Results: The concentration of IL-10 in the serum of patients ranged from 2.0 to 29.0 pg/ml. The median concentration of IL-10 was 5.9 (4.8-7.9) pg/ml, which differed from the control group by 6.5 (5.5-12.3) pg/ml (p=0.3).. However, when assessing the relationship between IL-10 levels and PD stage, a significant inverse correlation was observed only in the group of patients not receiving levodopa (r=-0.67; p=0.04). The relationship between the amount of IL-10 in the blood and uric acid is noteworthy (r=-0.44; p=0.04). In addition, it was found that the amount of IL-10 in the blood serum of patients with different clinical variants of PD differed: in patients of the akinetic-rigid group, the level of IL-10 was lower than in patients with the predominant clinical presentation of the tremor syndrome (5.3 (3.6-6.4) pg/ml) – (6.4 (5.5-8.1) pg/ml); r=0.03.
Conclusion: The concentration of IL-10 in the blood serum of patients with PD is of great importance. its amount depends on clinical forms, stages of the disease, as well as the onset of the disease.
