The heterogeneity of fatigue in different stages of Parkinson’s disease

M.R. Nodel, N.N. Yakhno (Moscow, Russia)

Meeting: 2016 International Congress

Abstract Number: 321

Keywords: Parkinsonism

Session Information

Date: Monday, June 20, 2016

Session Title: Parkinson's disease: Non-motor symptoms

Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm

Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2

Objective: To identify factors associated with fatigue in different stages of PD.

Background: Fatigue is an important contributor to poor quality of life. However, it is a common yet poorly understood symptom in PD.

Methods: 160 PD patients (mean age: 62,98 ± 0,6 years; mean duration of PD: 5,82 ±0, 65 years, H-Y stage: 2,6 ± 0,2) were enrolled in study. Patients were assessed using the UPDRS, Parkinson Fatigue Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory, PD Sleep Scale, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and Scales for Outcomes of Parkinson’s disease-Cognition. Linear correlation coefficients were calculated for evaluation the relationship of the symptoms in PD.

Results: The clinical significant fatigue was in 65 % patients. Increased fatigue was correlated strongly (r>0,6-0,7 ; p<0,05) with depression and anxiety on the 1-2 H-Y stages, apathy on 2 H-Y stage, sleep disorders on 3-4 H-Y stages, executive dysfunction on 4 H-Y stage.

Conclusions: We suggest pathophysiological and phenomenological heterogeneity of fatigue in different stages of PD.
