Age-related characteristics of the clinical progression of Parkinson’s disease

Meeting: 2026 International Congress

Keywords: Dopaminergic neurons, Hypokinesia, Parkinson’s

Category: Parkinson’s Disease: Clinical Trials

Objective: To analysis of the rate of progression of the disease in PD according to the age of patients.

Background: Although Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an age-related geriatric disease, it has age-specific characteristics.

Method: 155 patients with Parkinson’s disease and 20 healthy controls participated. The patients ranged in age from 48 to 90 years and were divided into groups based on clinical severity and progression of the disease.

Results: Moderate progression was the most common in all age groups, especially in the 60–74 (84%) and >74 (80%) age groups. This means that PD with an older age of onset often progresses at a moderate rate. Rapid progression was most common in patients with an onset at 45–59 years of age (19%) and in the young onset group (<45 years of age) (15%). This figure decreased to 6% in cases with an onset at 60–74 years of age, while it remained around 10% in the >74 age group. The overall results show that PC with an early onset is more likely to progress slowly or rapidly, while in cases with an older age of onset, moderate progression is mainly observed. It was found that the forms with a stronger akinetic component have a higher rate of development and a higher probability of rapid resolution than the tremor type.

Conclusion: Features of the clinical course of Parkinson’s disease are intrinsically dependent on the age of patients. It is characterized by relatively slow progression in young people.
