Objective: Exploring the correlation between hyperglycemic crisis (HC) severity and movement disorders (MD) in Hispanic patients with De Novo Hyperglycemia (DNH).
Background: Limited research exists on the relationship between HC severity and MD in Hispanic populations. This study aimed to address this gap by analyzing data from Hispanic patients with DNH, providing insights into the incidence and patterns of MD in this group.
Method: A cross-sectional study on Hispanic patients with DNH crises was conducted at a tertiary hospital’s emergency department. Data collected from clinical records included MD upon admission and glycemia classified by Sliding Scale Insulin Therapy (SSIT). The association between SSIT and MD was determined via the χ² test. Additionally, we calculated the odds ratio to determine the likelihood of developing MD with glycemia>300 mg/dL.
Results: The study involved 273 Hispanic patients (mean age: 65±13 years; 53.5% female). HC categories included >300 mg/dL (47.6%), <150 mg/dL (32.2%), 250-300 mg/dL (8.8%), 200-250 mg/dL (6.6%), and 150-200 mg/dL (4.8%). Movement disorders (MD) occurred in 4.76%: fine tremor (1.8%), truncal ataxia (1.1%), generalized myoclonus (0.7%), upper extremity myoclonus (0.7%), and chorea (0.4%). χ² test found no significant SSIT-MD association (χ²=5.18, p=0.269). Odds ratio: 1.30.
Conclusion: This study found no significant association between HC severity based on the SSIT and MD in Hispanic patients. However, the odds ratio indicates a 30% higher likelihood of MD in individuals with glycemia>300 mg/dL. Larger-scale research is warranted to better understand the relationship between hyperglycemia and movement disorders in this population.
