Objective: The aim of the study is to investigate the clinical and genealogical features of Parkinson’s disease.
Background: More than 90% of Parkinson’s disease (PD) cases are sporadic, while hereditary and familial forms account for about 5–10%. Genealogical analysis is an accessible method for studying hereditary predisposition and allows identifying the distribution of the disease within a family.
Method: A total of 213 patients with PD were examined: 90 (42.25%) women and 123 (57.75%) men, with an average age of 46.17±0.63 years. The control group consisted of 20 practically healthy individuals of similar age. The diagnosis was established according to the international criteria of the British Parkinson’s Disease Society Brain Bank. CT or MRI scans of the brain were performed to rule out other causes of parkinsonism. The clinical form of the disease (akinetic-rigid, mixed, tremor) and stage according to the Hoehn–Yahr scale were assessed.
Results: Depending on the age of onset, patients were divided into subgroups: early Parkinsonism (up to 45 years) – 79 (37.09%) patients and late Parkinsonism (>45 years) – 58 (27.23%). A family history of the disease was identified in 76 (35.68%) patients. A genealogical method was used to examine 897 first-degree relatives; 1,741 people were analyzed in the model population. No cases of PD were identified in the control group (168 people). A burdened family history was observed more often in men – 44 (57.89%) than in women – 32 (42.11%). The distribution of patients by generation was as follows: I – 48.68%, II – 30.26%, III – 21.05%.
Conclusion: BP is more often detected in first-degree relatives, which confirms the role of hereditary predisposition. A burdened family history was noted in 35.68% of cases, predominantly in men.
