Cognitive Impairment and Depression in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease

XD. Qu, SS. Li (Lanzhou, China)

Meeting: 2018 International Congress

Abstract Number: 1269

Keywords: Cognitive dysfunction, Depression, Parkinsonism

Session Information

Date: Monday, October 8, 2018

Session Title: Parkinson's Disease: Cognition

Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm

Location: Hall 3FG

Objective: To evaluate cognitive impairment and depression in patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and its relationship.

Background: Patients with Parkinson’s disease are prone to cognitive impairment and depression in addition to motor symptoms. The relationships between cognitive impairment and depression and the severity of Parkinson’s disease remains unclear.

Methods: Cognitive function and depression were evaluated in 55 patients with PD and 30 normal control subjects using MoCA and HAMD scales. Patients with cognitive impairment were divided into two groups, the depression group and the one without depression. Symptom severity of PD patient was assessed by UPDRS.

Results: Twenty six of 55(47.3%) PD patients were identified as cognitive impairment and 23(41.8%) were recognized as depression. Scores of MoCA in PD patients were significantly lower than those in controls (24.1±4.3, 26.5±2.9, P<0.01), especially were seriously lower in patients with depression (23.5±4.3,26.5±2.9,P<0.01).Compared with control group, HAMD scores were significantly higher in PD patient group (17.3±0.4,7.2±2.5,P<0.01).On Spearman correlation analysis, the mean score of MoCA was negatively correlated with UPDRS score (r=-0.439, P<0.01) in PD patients and mean score of HAMD was positively correlated with UPDRS score (r=0.435, P<0.01). There was a negative correlation between MoCA score and HAMD score (r=-0.513, P<0.01).

Conclusions: PD patients may develop cognitive impairment and depression. The cognitive impairment and depression are associated with the severity of PD.
