Objective: This study describes the development of partnership-based assistive team-based healing (PATH) Parkinson, a chatbot-based multidisciplinary mobile application (app) designed for patient–caregiver dyads with Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Background: This study describes the development of partnership-based assistive team-based healing (PATH) Parkinson, a chatbot-based multidisciplinary mobile application (app) designed for patient–caregiver dyads with Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Method: This study consists of three sequential phases. In Phase 1, longitudinal cohort data were collected over three years from patient–caregiver dyads with PD recruited from neurology clinics at two general hospitals. In Phase 2, the PATH Parkinson was developed based on findings from Phase 1 and the dyadic illness management theory (Lyons & Lee, 2018). The PATH Parkinson was also informed by the Yon PD app previously developed by the research team to monitor non-motor symptoms in patients with PD. A multidisciplinary team, including nurses, neurologists, psychologists, exercise specialists, and a technical development team collaborated in the development. PATH Parkinson integrates several components within a 6-week intervention program, including dyadic symptom monitoring, self-care education, chatbot-based symptom management support, psychological counseling, and communication with clinicians and psychologists. In Phase 3, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) will evaluate the effectiveness of PATH Parkinson in improving symptom appraisal agreement, mutuality, and resilience among patient–caregiver dyads with PD, patient self-efficacy and self-care, and caregiver self-efficacy and contribution to patient self-care.
Results: PATH Parkinson is expected to be well accepted by patient–caregiver dyads with PD as a disease management tool. Outcomes will be measured through the application at baseline, post-intervention, and one-month follow-up, with weekly symptom appraisal. During the development, feedback from the multidisciplinary team was incorporated to enhance the relevance and usability of PATH Parkinson. The RCT will evaluate the effectiveness of PATH Parkinson
Conclusion: PATH Parkinson is a chatbot-based dyadic multidisciplinary mobile app designed to support PD management in patient–caregiver dyads. The RCT will examine its potential to improve dyadic symptom appraisal agreement and related health outcomes.
