Objective: Study of the relationship between serum IL-10 levels in patients with Parkinson’s disease and levodopa therapy
Background: In Parkinson’s disease, dehydroepiandrosterone can lead to various complications, and these patients may also have elevated serum IL-10 levels..
Method: To assess the effect of levodopa therapy on serum IL-10 levels in patients with PD, IL-10 levels were compared in 3 groups: in those not receiving levodopa (n=18), the IL-10 concentration was 6.0 (3.8-7.1) pg/ml, in those receiving low doses (75-375 mg) of the drug (n=41), – 5.7 (4.4-6.3) pg/ml, and in those receiving high doses (500-1000 mg) (n=28) -7.9 (5.4-19.4). The amount of IL-10 was determined by IFA.
Results: It turned out that the IL-10 level in patients in the latter group was higher than in patients without levodopa therapy, p=0.04. IL-10 concentrations in the CSF of patients ranged from 2.6 to 7.7 pg/ml, with a median IL-10 concentration of 6.8 (4.2–7.3) pg/ml. No differences were found when the blood serum parameters were analyzed. It is noteworthy that the concentration of IL-10 in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with early-onset Parkinson’s disease and not receiving levodopa therapy ranged from 2.6 to 7.7 pg/ml, with a median concentration of IL-10 of 6.8 (4.2-7.3) pg/ml. No differences were found when the blood serum parameters were analyzed.
Conclusion: In PD, the level of IL-10 in the serum of patients is closely related to the duration of levodopa therapy. Long-term levodopa therapy leads to an increase in IL-10 levels and a worsening of the clinical course of the disease.
