Meeting: 2022 International Congress

Abstract Number: 1143

Keywords: Parkinson’s, Scales

Category: Parkinsonism, Others

Objective: To identify the socioeconomical factors associated with self-management Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Background: Understanding and evaluating how PD patients manage their disease is paramount to provide a person-centred care. Clinical specialists play an essential role in facilitating the self-management process and, the influence of socio-economic factors in PD patients’ ability to self-manage has been scarcely studied.

Method: A cross-sectional, international study, with a convenience sample of 153 PD Spanish and Latin-American patients was conducted. The Living with a Chronic Disease-PD (LW-CI-PD) scale was used as main outcome, and data on sex, age, educative level, self-perceived economic status (SES), Hoehn & Yahr stage, social support (DUFSS) and psychosocial adaptation (SCOPA-PS) was collected. Bivariate and multiple linear regression analyses were carried out.

Results: 67% of the sample were men, 59,39% were in Hoehn and Yarh stages 3 and the mean age was 66.2 years old. Patients in lower SES showed significantly lower scores in LW-PD self-management domain (p<0.001). The multiple linear regression analysis showed significant and independent association between self-management and SES (β=0.35; p=0.015).

Conclusion: People with a lower SES may have lower self-management skills. This study highlights the necessity to put more emphasis on the individual characteristics of the patient. Health professionals need to prioritize patients in deprived SES for developing person‐centred interventions to improve PD’s self-management.
