Meeting: 2026 International Congress

Keywords: Parkinson’s

Category: Parkinson's Disease: Genetics

Objective: To implement a sustainable ‘Train the Trainer’ model to strengthen research capacity in Parkinson’s disease (PD) genetics across underrepresented regions (URPs). This initiative promotes equitable global collaboration, builds local expertise, and addresses the evolving training needs of the Global Parkinson’s Genetics Program (GP2; www.gp2.org).

Background: GP2 is an international collaborative initiative dedicated to advancing our understanding of the genetic basis of PD. Beyond generating large-scale genetic data, GP2 prioritizes training the next generation of PD researchers worldwide, particularly in regions historically underrepresented in PD research.

Method: The Training and Networking Working Group (TN WG) have developed a structured ‘Train the Trainer’ (TTT) framework to deliver sustainable, locally embedded training in PD genetics. This model supports stepwise progression from workshop participant to co-instructor to independent workshop leader. Training is tailored to regional needs, delivered in local languages where feasible, and offered at basic and intermediate levels. This is complemented by regional training programs and hackathons that provide applied research experience.

Results: The TN WG have delivered 16 workshops to date, with 7 co-led by local GP2 trainees trained through the TTT model. A total of 168 trainees from 40 countries have participated. Three hackathons and one regional training program in Kyrgyzstan have been conducted. In 2026, four additional workshops (Kenya, Thailand, Uruguay, and Kazakhstan) and a regional training initiative in Thailand are planned. Through hands-on analytical training, mentorship, and GP2 dataset access, the program has supported the development of trainee-led research projects. So far, 25 have been published in peer-reviewed journals, and 38 projects are ongoing. Additionally, the TN WG have funded 25 sabbaticals and 7 Visiting Scientist placements supporting skill development and cross-institutional collaboration. Collectively, these initiatives demonstrate that the TTT model contributes to sustained, locally led research outputs in URP countries.

Conclusion: As GP2 continues to expand, we remain committed to fostering sustainable local research capacity and increasing trainee-led research outputs through the Trainee Network and application of the TTT model. These efforts play a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of PD genetics.
