Keywords: Aging, Cell death, Parkinsonism

Category: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms

Objective: The study aim to integrate various investigations pertaining to the incidence of Parkinson’s disease (PD) in Nigeria, with the objective of comprehensively characterizing the distribution of this disorder with respect to age, gender, and geographic location. The study aim to integrate various investigations pertaining to the incidence of Parkinson’s disease (PD) in Nigeria, with the objective of comprehensively characterizing the distribution of this disorder with respect to age, gender, and geographic location.

Background: PD represents a widespread neurodegenerative ailment associated with oxidative neuronal cell death. Accurate determination of its incidence through epidemiological research is crucial to unravel the risk factors associated with PD. Nevertheless, there is currently scarcity of consistent evidence regarding the incidence of PD in Nigeria

Method: We conducted a search for epidemiological investigations of PD in MEDLINE, AJOL, and EMBASE databases between 2001 and 2022. Our search strategy employed keywords such as “Parkinson’s disease” OR “Parkinson disease” OR “parkinsonian disorders” OR “Parkinsonism” AND “Nigeria”. The eligibility of the articles was assessed based on their titles, abstracts, and full texts. Meta-regression was performed to ascertain the presence of significant differences between groups. Through meta-analysis, we estimated the prevalence and incidence of PD.

Results: The results showed that the incidence of PD were 3 per 100,000 population. A higher prevalence of PD was found in males than in females in all groups, and a rising prevalence with age in both gender was established. Substantial heterogeneity was apparent in the age group of 80 years or above, which could be attributed to dissimilarities in methodologies employed across the studies.

Conclusion: PD incidence tends to rise with advancing age, albeit exhibiting a potential plateau in individuals aged 80 years or above. Observable variations in prevalence with respect to geographical region and gender can be discerned.
