Meeting: 2016 International Congress

Abstract Number: 268

Keywords: Aging, Cognitive dysfunction, Parkinsonism

Session Information

Date: Monday, June 20, 2016

Session Title: Parkinson's disease: Non-motor symptoms

Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm

Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2

Objective: The main goal of this study was to assess the impact of NMS burden and severity on Caregiver Burden in a cohort of older subjects with PD.

Background: NMS are major determinants of Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in people with Parkinson’s disease (PwP). Neuropsychiatric NMS of PD have been shown to be major determinants of Caregiver Burden in PD.

Methods: 56 patients with PD along with their carers attending the PD Programme for the Older Person at the Rankin Park Centre were enrolled for this study. NMS burden and severity were assessed with the Non-Motor Symptoms Questionnaire. Care Giver Burden was assessed with the Zarits Caregiver Burden Inventory.

Results: n= 56

Mean age: 77 years

Males: 29

Mean MMSE: 26/30

Kings ISC III Grading of NMS Severity based on NMSQ

Stage 1(Mild) – 20(35%)

Stage 2(Moderate)- 17(30%)

Stage 3(Severe)- 13(24%)

Caregiver Burden based on Zarits Caregiver Burden Inventory

No Burden at all- 5 (9%)

Mild to moderate burden- 15(27%)

Moderate to Severe burden- 23(41%)

Severe Burden- 13(23%)

On regression analysis, 64% of caregivers who had moderate to severe caregiver burden were caring for patients with stages 2 and 3 severity of NMS.

Conclusions: NMS severity is a determinant of Caregiver burden in older persons with PD. Further assessment of the subsets of NMS and their impact on Caregivers with specific targeted interventions may help alleviate Caregiver Burden in PD.
