Ciprofloxacin as the cause of syndroma extrapiramidale

Objective: Ciprofloxacin in rare cases can cause paresthesia, dysesthesia, hypoesthesia, tremor, convulsions, dizziness .

Background: The patient, 22 years old, comes in the emergency room, because of the feeling of weakness in the legs. She complained of difficulty walking, tremors both hands, instability. patients given the fact that she had an ear infection and headache a few days ago. Otorinolaringolog is prescribed the therapy ciprofloxacin, at 2x500mg. After the second day of therapy occured tremor in her hands .

Methods: Hospitalized. Done brain CT was normal. MRI, MRA of the brain, normal. MRI of the cervical and L /S spine normal findings. CSF was normal. The laboratory findings was reduced sodium, other all is normal. EMG and EEG findings normal .

Results: After the third day of taking cipro pills appeared to difficulty walking, with elevated tone by extrapyramidal type in all extremities. Due to the occurrence of the above symptoms the patient is switched off after the third day of antibiotic intake. After correction of sodium, laboratory findings were normal. The gradual recovery of the neurological findings with physical therapy after a month .

Conclusions: We have not found a better explanation of the reasons of such symptoms. The most likely cause is taking Ciprofloxacin antibiotic therapy, with such rare side effects.
