Objective: To evaluate the correlation between levels of 25 (OH)D (Vitamin D) and Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in a parkinsonian population.
Background: Considering a limiting disease of high prevalence worldwide, Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of elderly people and is related to the increased risk of post-fall lesions.
Methods: With a sample of 29 men and 26 women with PD, this cross – sectional study included 55 participants aged between 55 and 85 years, living in the city of Curitiba, PR – Brazil and their BMD values in femur and spine; Densitometry (DXA) were analyzed in conjunction with serum 25 (OH)D levels. A correlation analysis was used to estimate the main effects by comparing the mean values of these markers and the BMD condition in each gender. The data were normal for both groups using the Shapiro-Wilk test and the Pearson’s correlation test with significance level α=0.05 was chosen.
Results: Serum levels of vitamin D were not correlated with BMD values at the hip level of 0.765 (± 0.119) in males and 0.719 (± 0.131) in females and spine 0.996 (± 0.181) in males and 0.877 (± 0.134) in women and even after adjustment of the data for age, the correlation was not evidenced.
Conclusions: Serum levels of 25 (OH) D had no significant correlation with femur and spine BMD for both sexes in the elderly parkinsonians of this sample.
