Category: Parkinson's Disease (Other)
Objective: This study evaluated whether Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can provide accurate responses regarding Parkinsonism and serve as a supportive tool in palliative care.
Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder requiring comprehensive palliative care. However, access to palliative care is limited.
Method: Eleven movement disorder specialists blindly assessed responses from widely available GenAIs, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity to 100 standardized questions. Responses were rated on a five-point Likert scale across four major evaluation criteria: expertise, accuracy, ethics, and readability.
Results: There was no statistically significant difference among the GenAI models (P-value = 0.255). While Ethics and Readability scores were high, Expertise rated the lowest. Occasional factual errors or AI hallucinations across several responses were observed.
Conclusion: Although AI-assisted counseling requires cross-verification by medical professionals, the performance of GenAI systems is stronger than anticipated, suggesting potential for their future development as clinical support tools.
