Session Title: Quality Of Life/Caregiver Burden in Movement Disorders

Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm

Location: Exhibit Hall C

Objective: The aim of this study is to identify the factors that affect Health related Quality of Life (HrQoL) in patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Background: We compared the HrQoL of PD patients and stroke patients.

Methods: HrQoL of PD patients was measured using EQ-5D. 405 PD patients were enrolled at 5 university hospitals. HrQoL of stroke patients (N=362) was measured using 2012-2014 ‘Korean National Health & Nutrition Estimation Survey’data. The dependent variable, HrQoL score(EQ-5D index), is estimated synthesizing each of 5 dimensions of EQ-5D, and we used formula in ‘Korean National Health & Nutrition Estimation Survey 6th edition (2013-2014).

Results: EQ-5D index of PD patients (0.692) was much lower than that of stroke patients (0.797) (score 1 means complete health state). HrQoL of PD patients was lower than that of stroke patients in all 5 dimensions of EQ-5D (Mobility, Self care, Usual activities, Pain/Discomfort, Anxiety/Depression). PD patients who had lower income, lower education level, had comorbidities (Sleep disorder, depression, dementia, hypertension) and had higher H&Y score and longer duration of disease, were more likely to have worse HrQoL score.

Conclusions: As a general instrument of HrQoL, EQ-5D is simple and has a power of comparing other disease conveniently. In this study, we could compare the quality of life in PD patients with stroke patients. The quality of life in PD patients is lower than that of stroke patients.
