Objective: This study aims to explore the association between hemoglobin (Hb) levels and the severity of non motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease as evaluated through Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) non motor scores and the severity of the disease with Modified Hoehn and Yahr scores.
Background: Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects motor functions also manifests with various non motor symptoms such as mood disturbances, sleep disturbances, cognitive impairment and constipation. Low Hb levels is considered a factor that can influence the severity and increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Understanding the relationship between Hb levels and non motor symptoms may offer valuable insights into more comprehensive management of Parkinson’s disease.
Method:
Data were collected from 12 Parkinson’s disease patients undergoing pharmacological therapy at the Neurology outpatient clinic. Hb levels were measured and the severity of non motor symptoms was assessed using UPDRS Part I (Non Motor Aspects of Experiences of Daily Living). Additionally, the Modified Hoehn and Yahr scores was used to assess the progression of motor symptoms. Spearman correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate the correlation between variables.
Results: The correlation analysis between Hb levels and UPDRS non motor scores in 12 Parkinson’s disease patients revealed non significant results (p =0,714 , r=-0,118) indicating a very weak negative relationship. Similarly, the correlation between Hb levels and Hoehn and Yahr scores showed a positive weak correlation (p=0.834 and r =0.068).
Conclusion: The findings suggest that Hb levels have a weak and non significant relationship with both non motor symptoms and the severity of Parkinson’s disease, still need further investigation with a larger sample size.
