Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of of drug induced parkinsonism
Background: Drug induced parkinsonism (DIP) is a clinically important disease because it can be fully cured and prevented by just stop taking parkinsonism-inducing drugs. The aim of this study is to figure out and compare the prevalence patterns of PD and DIP by using national insurance Service Claims Data so that it would be helpful for preventing Parkinsonism.
Methods: We operationally defined PD and DIP patients, and measured prevalence of PD and DIP from 2009 to 2014 using NHISCD. Trend of prevalence of PD and DIP was analyzed by Cochran-Armitage test. We compared comorbidities of PD and DIP by applying relative risk ratio(RR).
Results: From 2009 to 2014, the number of PD patients increased by 1.6 times, and the prevalence of women was 1.4 times higher than that of men. At the same time, DIP patients were increased by 1.2 times and prevalence of women was also 1.6 times higher than that of men. Focusing on the co-morbidities, PD patients tended to have more diseases such as dementia, fracture, diabetes, cerebrovascular diseases and hypertension. On the other hand, DIP patients tended to have more diseases like mental disease, depression, hyperlipidemia, thyroid disease, gastric disease and vomiting. About 40% of PD patients and over 70% of DIP patients were taking Parkinsonism inducing drugs.
Conclusions: This is the first study of prevalence of PD and DIP using Nationwide representative data. The prevalence of DIP had been constantly increasing. Moreover 70% of DIP patients were still taking Parkinsonism-inducing drugs. To reduce the prescription of Parkinsonism-inducing drugs, education and systematic approach is needed.
