The Correlation Between Serum Uric Acid Levels And The Severity Of Parkinson’s Disease

Meeting: 2026 International Congress

Keywords: Aging, Parkinson’s

Category: Parkinson's Disease: Pathophysiology / molecular mechanisms of disease

Objective: This study aims to analyze the correlation between serum uric acid levels and the severity of Parkinson’s disease.

Background: Uric acid has been implicated in the progression of various degenerative diseases, with several studies suggesting that elevated levels may accelerate degenerative processes. However, clinical evidence investigating its impact on the progression of Parkinson’s disease remains limited. Understanding this correlation is crucial for improving prognostic assessments in neurodegenerative care.

Method: We conducted a cross-sectional design involving 12 subjects diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The severity of the disease was measured by Modified Hoehn and Yahr scale. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank correlation test to determine the strength and direction of the correlation between variables.

Results: The statistical analysis revealed a positive correlation between serum uric acid levels and the severity of Parkinson’s disease (Spearman’s ρ = 0.981, p < 0.001). Subjects with higher serum uric acid levels consistently demonstrated higher scores on the Hoehn and Yahr scale, indicating a greater degree of motor impairment within the stage 1 to 3 range.

Conclusion: There is a significant and positive correlation between uric acid levels and the severity of Parkinson’s disease in this study group. These findings suggest that higher uric acid levels are correlated with increased disease severity among patients in the early to mid-stages of the disorder, supporting the hypothesis that uric acid may influence the progression of neurodegenerative process.
