Meeting: MDS Virtual Congress 2021

Abstract Number: 464

Keywords: Parkinson’s

Category: Parkinson’s Disease: Pharmacology and Therapy

Objective: The aim of the study to increase the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy in patients with advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD) with motor fluctuations, using medical xenon

Background: As PD progresses, the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy, including with the help of levodopa drugs, decreases, motor fluctuations and drug dyskinesias appear, which significantly reduces the quality of life in the advanced stages of PD

Method: We examined 15 patients with advanced stages of PD (grade 3 according to Hen-Yar) with motor fluctuations, mean age 63.0 ± 2.9. Patients received therapy with levodopa drugs, while, prior to inclusion in the study, therapy remained stable for at least 3 months. The assessment of clinical manifestations was carried out using section III of the MDS-UPDRS scale, the severity of motor fluctuations was assessed using section IV of the MDS-UPDRS scale, the WAN scale, the study was carried out before the start of therapy and after the course of therapy using inhalation of an xenon-oxygen mixture in a ratio of 30/70

Results: After a course of inhalation of an xenon-oxygen mixture in a ratio of 30/70, against the background of stable pharmacotherapy with levodopa drugs, there was a decrease in the duration of the «off period» by 27%, the «on period» by 35%. According to the WAN scales overall health improvement was noted by 33%, activity by 31%, mood by 25%.

Conclusion: The results of our pilot study indicate an increase in the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy with levodopa drugs and an improvement in the quality of life of patients, against the background of the use of inhalations of xenon-oxygen mixture in a 30/70 ratio, which can be further used to increase the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy and, as a consequence, the quality of life of patients with Parkinson’s disease.
