Objective: To investigate the relationship between substantia nigra hyperechogenicity (SN+) and clinical features and disease progression in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) under transcranial sonography (TCS).
Background: Over the past two decades, transcranial sonography (TCS) has undergone rapid development. SN+ observed on TCS has become a supportive criterion for the diagnosis of PD. However, it is currently widely accepted in the academic community that SN+ is merely a biomarker for the diagnosis of PD, and whether it is associated with the severity and progression of the disease remains unclear.
Method: A total of 100 PD patients were collected from December 2020 to December 2022. The basic feature, UPDRS-III scores, blood uric acid levels, and substantia nigra hyperechoic of the patients were collected. Firstly, single factor and correlation analysis were conducted to compare the correlation between SN+ in PD patients and clinical data. Multiple stepwise linear regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of SN+ in PD patients and their relationship of clinical characteristics with disease progression.
Results: Through univariate analysis, it was found that there was no correlation between clinical date and the area of SN+ in patients; Through Spearman correlation analysis, it was found that the average UPDRSIII scores, uric acid level, and tremor were positively correlated with the area of SN+ (P<0.05), while patient age, course of disease, and rigidity were not correlated with the area of SN+ (P>0.05). Finally, multiple stepwise linear regression analysis results shows that the average UPDRSIII scores and uric acid level are independent influencing factors on the area of SN+ in PD patients.
Conclusion: SN+ is an imaging marker for the diagnosis of PD, the average UPDRSIII scores and uric acid level are independent influencing factors on the area of SN+ in PD patients.
