Objective: The aim of the this study is to determine the risk of the malnutrition in geriatric Parkinson’s disease population.

Background: Among the patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) especially who over the 60 years have higher risk of malnutrition. 20-70% patients with PD have weight loss.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study included 66 patients aged 60 and over in a movement disorders center at a university hospital. Demographic characteristics and comprehensive geriatric assessment were evaluated by a structured questionnaire. Malnutrition was assessed by Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) questionnaire was used along with anthropometric measurements (Body Mass Index (BMI), Mid-arm circumference (MAC) and Calf Circumference (CC)) to evaluate the nutritional status.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 67 (60-73) years. The numbers of PD patients with malnutrition was found 29 (43.9%). Multiple binary logistic regression analysis results yielded that the patients who have low calf circumference, presence of dyskinesia, advanced Hoehn&Yahr stage, take levodopa doses ≥ 400mg and swallowing difficulty were significantly associated with malnutrition.

Conclusions: Malnutrition is highly prevalent in geriatric patients with PD. The clinicians should be carefull about that and try to solve this problem.
