Meeting: 2024 International Congress

Abstract Number: 991

Keywords: Hippocampus, Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), Parkinson’s

Category: Parkinson's Disease: Neuroimaging

Objective: To analyse hippocampal volume differences among the patients with Parkinson’s disease and healthy individuals.

Background: In humans, hippocampus is involved in regulation of emotions, memory, learning and understanding processes. MRI imaging studies have revealed that hippocampal volume may vary between the demented and non-demented/ healthy individuals. Parkinson’s disease has associated mild cognitive impairment which can start early in the disease.

Method: Hippocampal volumes were calculated for non demented PD patients (90) and 25 age, gender matched healthy controls using 3T – Magnetic Resonance Imaging (2D gradient-echo sequencing, T2, axial, continuous, 2mm thickness, no interleaving slices) on Singovia workstation. ROC analysis was done for sensitivity and specificity.

Results: In our study Hippocampal volume in PD patients was significantly lower than controls.  Based on Youden’s index (Maximum = Sensitivity +Specificity – 1) the cut-off value for right hippocampal volume was165.22 and at this cut-off value sensitivity was 82.22% and specificity was 84%. The cut-off value for left hippocampal volume was 154.56 and at this value the sensitivity was 75.56% and specificity was 80%. Similarly, the cut-off value for average hippocampal volume was 161.19, and at this value the sensitivity was 74.19% and specificity was 84%.

Conclusion: Our study suggests that hippocampal volume is reduced in PD patients and may be a probable image marker for Parkinson’s disease.
