Meeting: 2023 International Congress

Abstract Number: 403

Keywords: Oxidative stress, Parkinson’s, Superoxide dismutase

Category: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms

Objective: To investigate the extract of Eromomastax speciosa neuroprotective/gastroprotective potential in the indomethacin (IND)-induced gastric ulcer in a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PD model.

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD is a chronic progressive neuro-generation disease characterize both motor and non-motor feature such as gastrointestinal dysfunction. PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, frequently associated with a gastric ulcer. Gastric ulcers add significantly to the motor fluctuations caused by PD, their early recognition and treatment may go a long way in improving the quality of life of PD patients.

Method: Rats were randomly divided into five groups of five rats each: normal control group, 6-OHDA/IND treated group, two lesion groups (PD/Ulcer) treated with extract of Eromomastax speciosa, and L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine/Omeprazole treated PD/Ulcer group. Striatal dopamine (DA), apoptosis/redox status, and motor/behavioral impairments were evaluated. Gastric oxidative stress, prostaglandin E2, mucus production, and gastric lesion were measured.

Results: Eromomastax speciosa successfully restored striatal DA and attenuated rotenone-induced motor/behavior deficits along with strong gastroprotective potential, possibly through antioxidant activity via reduction in malondialdehyde level and upregulated superoxide dismutase and catalase activities.

Conclusion: Eromomastax speciosa can be considered as a uniquely attractive therapeutic target in PD and its associated gastric ulcer.
