N. Alsomali, A. Mujtaba, A. AlSamrani, S. Marar, T. Mohammad (Riaydh, Saudi Arabia)

Meeting: 2017 International Congress

Abstract Number: 549

Keywords: Parkinsonism

Session Information

Date: Tuesday, June 6, 2017

Session Title: Parkinson's Disease: Pathophysiology

Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm

Location: Exhibit Hall C

Objective: To investigate the relationship of obesity, Hypertension (HTN), Ischemic heart disease (IHD), Dyslipidemia (DLP), and Diabetes Mellitus (DM) with PD.

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, and its relationship to metabolic factors remains largely unknown.

Methods: We identified 132 subjects in our cohort with diagnosis of PD (34% female, 66% male)  Clinical data in regards to  hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity and hypercholesterolemia was collected from both the complete medical records of patients and questionnaires

Results: We identified 132 subjects in our cohort with diagnosis of PD (34% female, 66% male)  Clinical data in regards to  hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity and hypercholesterolemia was collected from both the complete medical records of patients and questionnaires. Average PD disease duration was 6.7 yrs, and the average age of PD subjects was 66.9 yrs. The mean age at PD onset was 61.3 yrs. The percentage of IHD, DM, HTN, DLP and obesity among the PD subjects were 13%, 42.9%, 43.5%, 23% and 31.7%, respectively. A negative association was found between obesity and PD subjects although it was not significant ( p= 0.5). DM and HTN showed a significant positive correlation with age of onset for PD (p= 0,001); however, the percentages were less than the average percentage of the <60-70 years Saudi population prevalence to the DM and HTN, thus, these factors might be associated with a decreased risk of PD. IHD and DLP did not show significant correlation with PD or its age of onset.

Conclusions: These results suggest that metabolic factors might be associated with PD. Further studies with large sample size are needed to validate the positive and negative association of these markers with PD.
