Category: Parkinson's Disease: Surgical Therapy
Objective: To develop quantitative methods to assist clinicians in the programming of DBS systems, while establishing a consortium-based protocol among participating hospitals and
creating a secure platform for data sharing.
Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus is an effective therapy for controlling motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The increasing complexity of current systems, featuring directional electrodes and implantable pulse generators capable of recording neuronal activity, makes efficient individualized programming based on trial-and-error procedures more challenging.
Method: Five hospitals from four health research institutes are participating. A common protocol has been implemented for the collection of clinical, imaging, and neurophysiological data. Based on these data, predictive models will be developed using advanced signal-analysis and machine-learning techniques.
Results: Clinical, imaging, and neurophysiological data have been collected. In a second phase, neuronal activity patterns are expected to be identified that correlate with clinical status and enable prediction of the most effective programming settings.
Conclusion: Set_my_DBS proposes an innovative and collaborative approach to optimize and personalize DBS programming, establishing a national collaborative network.
