Impact of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics on cognition of individuals with Parkinson’s disease

Objective: Correlate cognitive function, clinical characteristics and sociodemographic status with the staging of PD.

Background: Introduction: Evidences point the occurrence of cognitive impairment in all stages of PD, this symptom being common and disabling, due to the high impact on quality of life, and mortality among patients.

Methods: The sample was derived from a Disorders Clinic of the movement of a reference hospital in Porto Alegre. Inclusion criteria were: diagnosis of PD, according to the United Kingdom Parkinson’s disease Society Brain Bank criteria for idiopathic PD (Hughes et.al. 1992) and to consent to participate. Were excluded patients with other neurological pathologies or with post deep brain stimulation surgery. The evaluation consisted of a medical history, cognitive testing battery (composed of eight tests), questionnaire about quality of life and depression and the Hoehn and Yahr Staging Scale.

Results: The sample consisted of 85 individuals with PD, with a mean age of 62.9 years (± 10.7), mean disease time of 10.4 years (± 5.7), and mean educational level ofl 4 years (± 4.3). There was a significant relationship between H & Y and cognitive tests MOCA, FAB and Scopa-cog and significant correlation between all cognitive tests with education and age. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between the cognitive tests with depression and quality of life.

Conclusions: It may be concluded that in this sample, individuals with PD in more advance stage, old age, low level of education, worse quality of life and depression had worse cognitive performance.
