Exergaming in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease

Objective: To analyze the effects of exergaming on functional balance and fatigue in patients with Parkinson’s disease

Background: Interventions that promote the integration of multi-sensory, cognitive and motor abilities are currently seen as an important tool in Parkinson’s disease treatment

Methods: In a randomized control study, 20 patients, aged 61 ± 9.11 years were allocated into two groups: exergaming group – EGG (n = 10) and conventional exercises (control) group – CG (n = 10). The functional balance (Berg Scale) and fatigue (Fatigue Severity Scale) were evaluated at baseline, after 12 weeks of treatment, and 60 days (follow-up) after the treatment

Results: The RM-ANOVA showed that balance and fatigue differed significantly between time points. Balance [F(1.29, 23.33) = 4.16, p=0.043]; Post-hoc Bonferroni test revealed a enhance from before to 12 weeks of exergaming treatment (p=0.033), and fatigue [F(2,36) = 5.96, p=0.006]; Post-hoc Bonferroni test, before to 12 weeks (p=0.000). However, this benefit was not sustained after the 60 day follow-up for both outcomes

Conclusions: Exergaming is effective in enhancing balance and reducing fatigue after 12 weeks of treatment, but this benefit was not sustained for a long-term (60 follow-up)
