Session Title: Huntington's Disease

Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm

Location: Hall 3FG

Objective: Huntington’s disease (HD) is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years and has no cure.

Background: With the recent advancements in the therapeutics and medical research the average life expectancy has increased drastically but simultaneously it has led to the threat of ageing disorders. Even in ancient Indian and Chinese civilizations people used to know about the disease but they tried to treat them by the traditional ways. In the present context of the study we have tried to use a holistic approach using latest therapies, excercises, yoga, meditation along with the ancient Indian herbs like Withania somnifera.

Methods: We searched and identified 10 patients in Patna district diagnosed with HD or having symptoms close to HD. The patients were requested to continue their medical treatment. Along with the medical treatment we advised the patients to do meditation and some yogic excercises in the morning and evening. These excercises were supplemented by deep breathing at least 25 times during the entire day. We asked the family members to keep the environment at home lively and positive by involving the patients in day to day discussion, taking them for a stroll in morning or in evening, engaging them in the hobbies and organising their daily routine. With the prior advise with the doctors the patients were also given Withania somnifera as per the medication advised by the doctors.

Results: With the prior advise with the doctors the patients were also given Withania somnifera as per the medication advised by the doctors. After 6 months of following the holistic approach we found the patients relieving the stress and showing signs of recovery from a debilitating disorder.

Conclusions: We emphasize a holistic treatment for the diseases like HD.
