Objective: To determine relation of fatigue to depression, anxyety and sleep disorder in patients with focal and segmental dystonia.

Background: Dystonia is movement disorder characterised with motor and nonmotor symptoms such as anxyety, depression, pain, fatigue, sleep disorder and cognitive impairment with still unknown etiology.

Method: Patients with focal and segmental dystonia were included. All the patients were tested during their regular out patient visit in ambulance for botulinum toxin. Demographic data were collected about age, gender, disease duration and type of dystonia. To assess fatigue we used Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS), for depression Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-2), for anxyety Beck Anxyety Inventory (BAI), for night-time sleep problems Pitsburg Sleep Scale Inventory (PSQI) and for daily sleep problems Epwort Sleep Scale (ESS).

Results: We have analyzed 49 patients (35 with cervical dystonia, 12 with blepharospasm, 1 with oromandibular dystonia and 1 with Meige syndrome), 14 (28,6%) male and 35 (71,4%) female, median of age of 57,00 (IQR 45.50-64.50) and median of disease duration of 5,00 years (3,00-13,00). Fatigue reported 65,3% of the patients. We have found positive correlation between fatigue and depression (p<0,001), anxyety (p<0,001) and night-time sleep (p<0,005). There was no correlation with daily sleep problems (p<0,093). Patients with fatigue have more severe depression (p<0,024), higher level of anxyety (p<0,016) and more sleep problems during the night (p<0,007).

Conclusion: Fatigue in patients with focal and segmental dystonia is related to depression, anxyety and night time sleep problems.
