Objective: In this study, we sought to find out how PD affects to chronic headache.
Background: Relationship between headache and Parkinson’s disease(PD) is not well published. There are some researches that headache such as migraine affects PD but rare researches on the opposite.
Method: We enrolled over 65 year-old patients with PD who have a chronic headache and take pills above 8 days a month for relieving headache. Patients took examination of modified Hoehn and Yahr stage(M-HY) on the day of visiting and follow-up examination after 2 year later. Deterioration of PD is defined as increasing 1 or more on follow-up M-HY test and headache improvement is defined as decreasing of more than half on taking analgesics.
Results: Total 22 patients were enrolled. 10 patients (45.5%) showed deterioration of PD with significant decreasing of M-HY. The deterioration group was older (74.3±4.8), women dominated (60.5%) and poor initial M-HY (2.4±0.72) but has no statistical significant of p = 0.1, p ≥ 0.999, p = 0.1, respectively. In deterioration group, 8 patients (80%) showed decreasing of frequency of taking analgesic with statistical significant (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: In the PD patients with chronic headache, the number of analgesic use decreased significantly if symptoms of PD were deteriorated.
