Keywords: Disease-modifying strategies, Parkinson’s, Rehabilitation

Category: Parkinson's Disease: Epidemiology, Phenomenology, Clinical Assessment, Rating Scales

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of educational strategies in enhancing caregiver knowledge, skills, and confidence in managing Parkinson’s disease (PD) and to identify gaps in current caregiver training programs.

Background: Caregivers play a crucial role in supporting individuals with PD, managing both motor and non-motor symptoms. However, the complexity of PD care presents challenges, particularly for informal caregivers with limited medical training. Structured education programs are essential to improve caregiver preparedness, reduce burden, and enhance patient outcomes.

Method: A systematic review was conducted across Cochrane, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Studies assessing educational interventions aimed at caregivers of PD patients were included. Data extraction focused on program content, delivery methods, caregiver-reported outcomes, and patient-related benefits. Thematic synthesis was performed to identify effective educational strategies.

Results: A total of 62 studies met inclusion criteria. Interactive training programs, including workshops, tele-education, and digital learning modules, significantly improved caregiver knowledge retention (mean increase: 30%, p<0.01). Psychoeducational interventions led to reduced caregiver burden (Zarit Burden Interview mean reduction: -5.6 points) and increased self-efficacy. Barriers to effective training included time constraints, accessibility issues, and a lack of culturally adapted materials. Hybrid models combining in-person and virtual education demonstrated the highest caregiver satisfaction rates.

Conclusion: Structured educational interventions improve caregiver knowledge and reduce burden in PD management. Future efforts should focus on developing accessible, culturally sensitive, and personalized training programs to maximize caregiver engagement and patient well-being.
