Abstract Number: 1163

Keywords: Depression, Neurobehavioral disorders

Category: Parkinsonism, Others

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between thyroid disturbances and severity of depression in de novo PD patients Croatian residents.

Background: Thyroid disease is more prevalent in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) Croatian residents than in control group. Depression is one of the most common symptoms of premotor phase of PD. Association between thyroid disturbances and depression has long been recognized.

Method: This cohort study analysed data from 222 patients with de novo PD (mean age of 67,76; 101 men, among whom 70 subjects (31,5%) also had thyroid disease; 55 levothyroxin-treated.hypothyroidism, 54 thyroiditis, 7 hyperthyroidism, 2 subclinical hypothyroidism and 1 subclinical hyperthyroidism, (mean age of 69,2 years, 24 men). Control group consisted of 152 PD patients without thyroid problems. Depression assessment was performed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).

Results: At baseline, patients with de novo PD accompanied with thyroid-disease had higher mean depression score (BDI) in comparisons to de novo PD patient without thyroid disease (mean 24,8 vs. 21,53). However, statistical analysis did not show a significant difference between groups.

Conclusion: We demonstrate that severity of depression in de novo PD patients is higher in de novo PD patients with thyroid disease in comparisons to de novo PD patients without thyroid disturbance at baseline, but these results did not reach statistical significance. Our results suggest that the presence of thyroid disease does not represents significant risk factor for depression in de novo PD patients.
