Background: Behavioral and psychological symptoms are often seen in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Patient diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) on clinical grounds who subsequently turn out to have normal dopamine transporter imaging have been referred to as SWEDDs (scans without evidence of dopaminergic deficits). In this study, we aimed at investigating the prevalence and severity of BPSD in PD-SWEDDs.

Methods: Fourty-four patients with PD-SWEDDs who visited the neurology outpatient clinic of were included. A trained neurologist or a supervised test technician administered the neuropsychological test, the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery (SNSB) including mini mental State Examination (MMSE) and Clinical Dementai Rating (CDR). The instrument used for assessing behavioral and psychological symptoms was Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Questionare (NPI-Q).

Results: In order of prevalence, the symptoms depression, irritability, anxiety, and agitation were very common symptoms occurring in PD-SWEDDs group. The prevalence and severity of behavioral and psychological symptoms were found to be in positive correlation with the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scores.

Conclusions: Behavioral and psychological symptoms are found even in PD-SWEDDs, depression being the most common symptoms. Physicians should be aware of this when managing patients.
