Objective: We compare several pre- and post-clinical outcomes to assess the effects in a group of Portuguese people with PD.
Background: Government-mandated restrictions due to Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have profoundly impacted people’s lives at different levels. This impact of COVID-19 restrictions upon clinical features in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) is still poorly characterized in the Portuguese population.
Method: Participants were assessed before quarantine and after 2 months of lockdown. Several outcomes were assessed including: exercise changes; activities of daily living (The Schwab & England ADL – scale); quality of life (Parkinson Disease Questionnaire) and occurrence of falls. This study was approved by the ethics committee of Egas Moniz University under the number 892/2020. All participants gave their informed consent to participate in the study.
Results: Twenty-seven individuals participated with ages between 57 and 92 (71.93 ± 7.69) years old. Thirteen individuals (48%) discontinued physiotherapy sessions while fourteen (52%) maintained some sort of exercise during quarantine (either online, via homecare or with some combination of both). Patient’s quality of life showed a significant statistical difference between the periods being analyzed (p-value < 0.001) with a mean score of 40.87% before the pandemic period and 45.00% after. Participants reported an increase in the difficulties in completing daily activities or chores (37%). Falls occurred in 14% of the patients, which represents an #% increase/decrease in this potentially serious complication.
Conclusion: Our results show participants fared worse in the majority of outcomes assessed pre and post COVID-19 lockdown period. Such negative impacts due to changes in daily routines suggest the need for implementation of behavioral and health promoting strategies specific to each population, in order to mitigate these effects.
