Objective: To review existing competency-based training programs for health professionals in Parkinson’s disease (PD) management and identify future educational needs to enhance patient care.
Background: PD is a complex neurodegenerative disorder requiring a multidisciplinary approach to optimize management. Competency-based training modules have emerged as a structured strategy to equip healthcare professionals with essential skills. However, gaps in standardization and accessibility persist across different healthcare settings.
Method: A systematic review was conducted across Cochrane, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Studies assessing PD training programs for physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals were included. Data extraction focused on curriculum design, core competencies, training delivery methods, and effectiveness measures. Thematic synthesis identified key elements for future competency-based models.
Results: A total of 68 studies met inclusion criteria. Current training programs vary widely in content, ranging from pharmacological management to interdisciplinary care strategies. Simulation-based learning and tele-education modules demonstrated significant improvements in clinical competency (p<0.01). However, barriers included limited access to standardized curricula, inconsistent assessment frameworks, and resource constraints in low-income settings. Future needs include personalized learning pathways, integration of digital tools, and standardized certification models to ensure competency across healthcare professions.
Conclusion: Competency-based training is essential for improving PD management. Standardized curricula, digital learning platforms, and interdisciplinary education should be prioritized to enhance healthcare professionals’ preparedness. Future research should focus on developing globally scalable training models to ensure equitable PD care.
