Meeting: 2023 International Congress

Abstract Number: 57

Keywords: Parkinson’s

Category: Parkinson’s Disease: Clinical Trials

Objective: Disseminate and inform the activity of the Latin American Research Consortium on the Genetics of Parkinson’s Disease (LARGE-PD) in Argentina.

Background: The LARGE-PD consortium was born in 2005 in order to contribute and increase knowledge about Parkinson’s disease (PD) in Latin America.

Epidemiological studies not only improve our understanding of the molecular pathophysiology and its potential modifying factors, but also contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies based on the concept of precision medicine. Currently, most information on PD focuses on the European or North American population, so Large-PD provides case-control information on these underrepresented populations in Latin America. They will provide new knowledge about various genes, environmental factors, ancestry, therapeutic responses, as well as facilitate better selection and design of clinical trials.

Method: Currently, LARGE-PD is composed by 13 recruitment centers in the main hospitals in the Americas and the Caribbean (LARGE-PD Centers). This Consortium was designed and is led by Dr. Ignacio Mata, Cleveland Clinic, USA, funded through the Michael Jay Fox Foundation (MJFF) and Aligning Sciences Across PD-Global Parkinson Genetic Project (ASAP-GP2).

In Argentina, our center has been invited to participate in this consortium, aiming to collect standardized demographic, epidemiological and PD-related data on 100 patients, 100 unaffected relatives, and 100 controls, with their respective DNA samples.

Results: LARGE-PD currently includes 4,280 individuals (with a 1:1 ratio between patients and healthy controls). Our institution, together with other centers involved, is expected to achieve a significant representation of the Argentine population with PD.

Conclusion: The LARGE-PD consortium will allow access to a greater knowledge of the genetic characteristics of our population with PD, refining the possibility of developing future targeted therapies.
