Category: Parkinson's Disease: Epidemiology, Phenomenology, Clinical Assessment, Rating Scales

Objective: To identify the impact of depression on QoL in a group of patients with IPDWD.

Background: The Quality of Life (QoL) in patients with Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease Without Dementia (IPDWD) is altered in specific domains such as emotional well-being, cognition, bodily discomfort, stigma and other social factors that prevent patients with this type of diagnosis from having a QoL in physical, mental and family aspects.

Method: Participants: 50 patients diagnosed with IPDWD were recruited, with a mean age of 64.85 years. We determined the association of depression with the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), for QoL we used the Parkinson’s Disease Quality of life questionnaire PDQ-39, compared with a group of healthy subjects without a diagnosis of IPDWD. Statistical analysis: The Mann-Whitney U test – Spearman’s Rho.

Results: There are significant differences between patients with IPDWD and the group of healthy subjects (p<0.000) in all components of the PDQ-39 scale, there are also significant differences between both groups in the score obtained in the GDS (p<0.001). There is a statistically significant negative correlation between the total score obtained from the GDS and the total score of the PDQ-39 (Rho= ,472; p=.001), and in the mobility (Rho= ,468; p=.001), activities of daily living (Rho= ,406; p=.002) and stigma (Rho= ,335; p=.017) items

Conclusion:

depression influences the impairment of QoL in patients with IPDWD, especially mobility, activities of daily living and social stigma. It is important to establish functional neurorehabilitation plans that aim to improve QoL in patients with IPDWD.
