Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the occurrence and the clinical characteristics of re-emergent tremor in a population of patients with PD.

Background: Re-emergent tremor is a postural tremor that appears a variable delay in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Previous studies showed that patients with re-emergent tremor might represent a benign subtype of Parkinson’s disease.

Methods: In this study 72 Parkinson’s patients were included according to Queen Square Brain Bank diagnostic criteria and 17 re-emergent tremor was found in these patients. Hoehn-Yahr Scale (H&Y), Movement Disorder Society-Sponsored Revision of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS), Parkinson’s Disease Nonmotor Symptoms Scale (NMSS), The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were performed to all patients

Results: Patients with and without re-emergent tremor were homogeneous in terms of age and sex distribution. The disease severity and duration of the patients were similar. The mean tremor latency was 7,90 (±5,28) seconds and the mean severity was 2,23 (±1,14). Patients with re-emergent tremor had 45,87 (±17,57) points (p:0,335) in patients without a total score of 50,94 (±22,46) on MDS-UPDRS. NMSS score was 93,00 (±61,49) in patients with re-emergent tremor while 86.11 (±46,46) in patients without re-emergent tremor. Depression was associated with %47,3 of patients without re-emergent tremor, but in patients with re-emergent tremor this rate was %41,2. Cognitive impairment was present in %36,4 of the patients who had re-emergent tremor and in %52,9 of the patients without re-emergent tremor.

Conclusions: As a result of statistical analyzes for each subdivision of MDS-UPDRS; it was determined that daily activities, motor functions, cognitive functions and mood were not affected by the presence of re-emergent tremor. It was also found that nonmotor symptoms were not different between the groups. The MOCA used to assess cognitive functions and the GDS used to assess mood did not reveal any significant differences between the groups too.
