Risk and Protective Substances among the Parkinson Disease Patients in Palembang Municipality

Objective: The aim of the study was to describe risks and protective consumptions and habits among the Parkinson’s Disease (PD) Patients in Palembang Municipality

Background: Parkinson’s disease is caused by cell death in the substantia nigra. Genetic factors and environmental exposures to certain substances and habits play important roles in the pathogenesis of PD.

Method: It was a descriptive study. Parkinson’s disease patient in Palembang municipality was interviewed by means of a specially devised questionnaire to obtain information about the habit of consumptions of protective factors such as coffee and tea, curcumin (ginger and turmeric products), alcohol, NSAID and cigarette. The habits of drink wells water, dairy products, and harmful chemicals exposure that have been reported to cause PD are also asked. All the data were analyzed descriptively.

Results: There were 73 patients who were participating. 58.9% were male, with the median age of the patients being 64; range from 40 to 86. There were 83.3% who did not have cigarette smoking habits; 76.7% who did not consume NSAID; and 64.4% who did not have alcohol consumption. 49.3% who did not consume coffee; 42.5 % who did not consume tea, and 19.2% who did not consume curcumin. There were 58.9% drank wells water, 46.5% consumed dairy product, 23.3% ever living in chemical-exposed area, and 17.8% exposed to chemical pesticides or herbicides.

Conclusion: Not having the habits of cigarette smoking, and not consuming NSAID as well as the habits of drinking wells water and dairy products are more prominent among the Parkinson’s disease patients in Palembang
