Keywords: Dyskinesias

Category: Rating Scales

Objective: This study aimed to validate the Kazakh version of the Movement Disorder Society-Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale

Background: The Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale (UDysRS) has been developed to provide a comprehensive rating tool of dyskinesia in Parkinson’s disease. Because dyskinesia therapies involve multicenter studies, having a scale that is validated in multiple non-English languages is pivotal to international efforts to treat dyskinesia. Here we present the formal process for completing officially approved non‐English versions of the MDS‐UDysRS and specifically focus on the first of these versions in Kazakh.

Method: The UDysRS was translated into Kazakh and then back translated into English using two independent teams. Cognitive pretesting was conducted on the Kazakh version and required modifications to the structure or wording of the translation were completed. The final Kazakh version was administered in 250 native Kazakh-speaking PD patients with levodopa induced dyskinesia. To conduct the cognitive pretesting and data entry of the large cohort, a cognitive pretesting packet and a data entry guide were translated into Kazakh. The data from the large Kazakh cohort were analyzed to assess the confirmatory factor structure to the Spanish UDysRS (the Reference Standard). Secondary analyses included an exploratory factor analysis.

Results: For all four parts of the Kazakh MDS‐UPDRS, the CFI, in comparison with the Spanish‐language data, was 0.94. Exploratory factor analyses revealed some differences between the two datasets, however these differences were considered to be within an acceptable range. The Kazakh version of the MDS‐UPDRS reaches the criterion to be designated as an Official Translation and is now available for use.

Conclusion: These results demonstrate that the Kazakh translations of MDS-UDysRS have adequate clinimetric properties. They are established as the official translations and can be reliably used in Kazakh speaking populations.
