Does gender influence the expression of non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease?: An observational study

Objective: Our goal was to evaluate how gender influenced the expression of non-motor symptoms in a sample of PD patients.

Background: Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is defined by a combination of motor and non-motor symptoms. Both limit quality and whereas motor signs (bradykinesia, tremor and rigidity) are more relevant at the first stages of the disease, non-motor ones lead to bigger disability while the disease is progressing1.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with PD were recruited at the Movement Disorder Unit at “Infanta Leonor Hospital” in Madrid. We systematically evaluated them with the Non-Motor Symptoms Questionnaire (NMSQ)2 as well as basic clinical and demographic information.

 

Results: 40 patients were selected, of which 16 were male (40%) and 24 female (60%). The later were  older (79 Vs 73 y-o; p 0.0496). Most of men and women were in stage 2 Hoehn-Yahr. There wasn’t any significant difference among the variables in  NMSQ in both groups, but in 14th and 20th items, it seem to be some trend to appear more frequently in females (table 1 and 2).

Conclusions: In this observational study, gender did not influence the expression of non-motor symptoms in PD. Female participants showed a trend for more hallucinations and dizziness. Nonetheless, some of these differences could be explained by the older age of the female group. Larger studies are needed to confirm these results.
